European orchestras are mobilising in favour of Pernambuco and its preservation and against the proposal for classification in CITES Appendix I submitted by Brazil.
During the Conference of the Parties (CoP19) of CITES – the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, or Washington Convention – to be held from November 14 to 25, country representatives will vote on Brazil's proposal to strengthen rules governing trade in Pernambuco by moving it from Appendix II to Appendix I.
This hardening - which would extend to bows - would constitute a removal of all supplies to bow makers, condemning them to extinction. Commercial transactions involving bows and musicians travelling with their bows would then be subject to the CITES permit credentialing system. This would lead to insurmountable administrative procedures. For example, the international travelling of a symphony orchestra would lead to the execution of 480 administrative formalities for the bows of the orchestra alone.
At the initiative of Pearle* - Live Performance Europe, the European federation of music and performing arts organisations - orchestras from all over Europe - such as the Wiener Symphoniker, the Opera de Paris and the orchestra of the Scala in Milan – mobilise and sign this open letter.
To date, more than 120 European musical structures engaged on the topic and urge representatives of the European Union and its Member States to vote against the classification of Pernambuco wood in Appendix I of the Convention during CITES CoP19 in Panama.

Pernambouc : les orchestres affichent leur soutien pour la sauvegarde de l’espèce, mais contre la proposition du Brésil
Les orchestres d'Europe et au-delà se mobilisent en faveur du pernambouc et de sa préservation et contre la proposition de classement à l’Annexe I de la CITES soumise par le Brésil.
Lors de la CoP19 de la CITES - Convention sur le commerce international des espèces de faune et de flore sauvages menacées d'extinction, ou Convention de Washington – qui se tiendra du 14 au 25 novembre prochains, sera votée la proposition du Brésil de durcir la réglementation encadrant le commerce du Pernambouc en le faisant passer de l’Annexe II à l’Annexe I.
Ce durcissement - qui s’étendrait aux archets - reviendrait à supprimer tout approvisionnement aux archetiers, les condamnant à l’extinction. Les transactions commerciales portant sur les archets et les musiciens voyageant avec leurs archets seraient alors soumis au système de permis CITES. Ce qui donnerait lieu à des démarches administratives insurmontables. A titre d’exemple, le passage de frontières internationales d’un orchestre symphonique engendrerait l’exécution de 480 formalités administratives pour les seuls archets de l’orchestre.
Sous l’impulsion de Pearle* - Live Performance Europe – la fédération européenne des organisations musicales et des arts de la scène - les orchestres de toute l’Europe - comme par exemple les Wiener Symphoniker, l’Opéra de Paris et l’orchestre de la Scala de Milan - se mobilisent, et signent cette lettre ouverte.
Ce sont à ce jour les représentants plus de 120 structures musicales qui se sont engagé.e.s et qui exhortent les représentants de l’Union européenne et de ses États membres à voter contre une classification du bois de pernambouc à l’Annexe I de la Convention lors de la CoP19 de la CITES au Panama.
