Pearle*, the leading European federation representing live music and performing arts organisations, gathered in Helsinki for its spring members’ conference on 21 and 22 May.
Co-hosted by the Association of Finnish Theatres (STEFI) and the Association of Finnish Symphony Orchestras (SUOSIO), the conference opened with a panel on the Nordic model of cooperation to draw inspiration for cross-border collaboration from this region of Europe.
As the conference took place in Finland, it was only fitting to learn more about the country's unique approach to comprehensive security, especially at a time when the foundations of democracy are facing new pressures across Europe and the world.
In her keynote, Rosa Meriläinen, Executive Director of KULTA, the Central Organisation for Culture and the Arts in Finland, highlighted how culture is embedded in national defence strategies, integrating cultural institutions and artists into the national preparedness model. She emphasised that arts and culture can contribute to psychological resilience and societal cohesion.
A second session on preparedness delved into the practical steps cultural organisations can take to protect their employees and audiences during crises, featuring examples from Finland and Estonia.
Francisca Carneiro Fernandes, president of Pearle*, added, “We believe that culture and the performing arts can help shape resilient, inclusive, and forward-thinking societies. Pearle* remains committed to advocating for the performing arts as an essential element for social cohesion, democratic life, and the defence of shared European values.”
On the second day, Pearle* had the pleasure of welcoming MEP Li Andersson, Chair of the European Parliament Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL), for an exclusive session on employment and social policies in Europe and an exchange on a future EU Artists Charter. Andersson provided behind-the-scenes insights into the EU’s initiatives, including an upcoming Quality Jobs Act and Labour Mobility Package.
The conference also provides a platform for members to exchange ideas, address ongoing policy issues, and strengthen collaboration across the sector. Finally, it was an occasion to introduce the newly released 2025 Pearle* Activity Report.
