Urgent Call for EU Legislative Action against Online Piracy of Live Content

Pearle* has joined a coalition of major organisations from the cultural, audiovisual, and sports sectors in co-signing a joint letter to Commissioner Virkkunen and Commissioner Micallef, urging the European Commission to take decisive legislative action against the growing problem of online piracy of live content.

Despite the 2023 Recommendation on combating online piracy of sports and other live events, voluntary measures have proven insufficient, and piracy continues to cause severe economic and reputational harm across the EU’s creative and cultural industries. Therefore, the letter calls for strong EU legislation to ensure the swift removal of illegal live streams, effective blocking of pirate sites, and better enforcement of online rules.
