On 18th of March, seven major cultural and event organisations sent a letter to Commissioner Thierry Breton.
The signatories are asking for an EU-wide approach to reactivate Europe’s cultural events and venues before the busiest period of the year.
The letter follows the recently published Commission communication, which states that the Commission will develop a Digital Green Certificate for travels within the EU. The Commission will also exchange information on the safe re-opening of the cultural sector and look into EU-wide guidelines for the live event sector.
As the letter states, many venues are faced with permanent closure, which could cause irreparable damage to Europe’s cultural scene. It also details the timid steps that have been taken by some countries, where small-scale events have been trialled but not at capacities enough to recover the costs associated with holding the event.
The letter reiterates that to ensure a smooth return to events, including international travel to and from events, there must be a coordinated approach.
